London, 21 November 2018: With more than 750 delegates from over 120 companies, the first large scale event with a focus on mental health in the workplace, This Can Happen, took place on 20th November with HRH The Duke of Cambridge in attendance.
The Duke joined various sessions during the conference including a seminar on male mental health and was part of a panel discussion on high pressured working environments where he shared his experiences of working in the Air Ambulance Service. The Duke is calling on businesses to create an “open, understanding and supportive environment” to help colleagues who may experience similar feelings to the ones he did during his work with the Service.
Neil Laybourn co-founded the event with Jonny Benjamin MBE and Zoe Sinclair of Employees Matter, an employee engagement specialist, to highlight solutions and innovation to tackle mental health in the workplace.
Neil and Jonny first met 10 years ago when Jonny was contemplating taking his own life on Waterloo Bridge and Neil talked him down. The pair have become close friends and have made great strides in raising the profile of mental health awareness in the UK.
Zoe Sinclair, co-founder of This Can Happen, said: “We are overwhelmed with the support we have received for This Can Happen. We wanted to create an event where any member of staff – from post room to boardroom – affected by mental health issues could come and learn how to help themselves, colleagues or loves ones in a practical way. We are delighted that so many people have come together to convert awareness into actionable solutions”.
This Can Happen featured unique content with sessions hosted by thought leaders on topics including technology and mental health, addiction in the workplace, suicide at work, menopause and mental health and peer support.
At the conference, Barbara Harvey, Managing Director for Research at Accenture, revealed that ninety percent of workers have been touched by mental health challenges either personally or through someone they are close with, dispelling the 1 in 4 figure widely quoted in the media.
