Redundancy and
Treatment Centres
The most effective treatment for alcoholism has been shown to be inpatient treatment at a specialist unit. This is available on the NHS, but there may be a waiting list. Private treatment centres vary enormously in price, as the list below demonstrates, and paying a higher price does not necessarily mean a higher likelihood of success, although it may mean more comfortable accommodation. Funding is sometimes available through private health insurance. If funding is an issue, contact the LawCare helpline on 0800 279 6888.
Most treatment centres include an initial period of medically supervised detoxification. Where this is not offered, the patient will need to make arrangements to detox prior to admission.
Generally an initial assessment will be offered, sometimes free of charge and sometimes by telephone, although most centres prefer to do this in person. A place will then be offered if it is deemed appropriate. Most centres prefer funding up front.
The majority of treatment centres operate on the 12-step Minnesota Model used by Alcoholics Anonymous, and encourage patients to attend AA meetings during and after treatment. In selecting a treatment centre it is worth bearing in mind that it is not necessary to choose one close to where you live, since you will be staying for the entire course of treatment. In addition it can be beneficial to your recovery to be as far from home as possible.
