Media Information

As a small charity, LawCare welcomes interest from legal publications and other media as a vital method of informing members of the profession about our service. We are happy to provide quotes relevant to our work, statistics about calls to our helpline, and articles relevant to our areas of expertise. We recognise that most journalists work to deadlines, and will try to provide whatever is needed as quickly as possible, within reason.

Official "soundbites" should come from our Chief Executive, Hilary Tilby, who can be reached on 01273 461861. For other information, including statistics, please contact Anna Buttimore at our administration office on 01268 771333.

When reporting on LawCare, please note the correct usage of the name (with a capital C in the middle but no space). We would also be grateful if any article which refers to LawCare could also include the freephone helpline number appropriate to the jurisdiction (see the home page) and/or the website address.

Please also note below some common misconceptions about LawCare:

  • Our helplines are not staffed by volunteers, but by trained staff members who have previously worked within the legal profession (generally as solicitors). However, in referring callers to ongoing one-to-one support, volunteers are often used. LawCare volunteers are mostly lawyers who have recovered from the impairment suffered by the caller.

  • We do not give legal advice, financial aid (except in very limited circumstances) or offer professional counselling, except through private counsellors where this is arranged with the caller.

  • We are not part of the Law Society, Bar Council or any other professional body, and do not report back to them. We are an independent charity and a limited company.

  • We keep a database of counsellors and other professionals who have experience of the legal profession, and do our best to vet those individuals and organisations on it, but none of them are entitled to claim that they are endorsed or recommended by LawCare.

  • We do not deal just with alcohol related issues, but with other health issues which can impair the life of a lawyer such as stress, depression, drug abuse and eating disorders.

Two introductory articles about LawCare's work are available by clicking on the links below. You are free to use these to fill space, but should recognise that other publications also have access to them. We can supply further articles on a wide range of subjects on request. Call 01268 771333 or email .
