What is Stress?

Stress is not always a bad thing—very little would get done without it, but when the pressure rises to levels when stress becomes distress, it can become a huge problem.

Different people respond differently to the stressors in life and some cope better than others. Some people enjoy constantly being rushed and busy, and others go to pieces at the prospect of missing a deadline. It doesn’t mean anyone is “weaker” or less able than anyone else - they just respond differently.

Why should I worry about it?

Stress can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease and depression. A stressful working environment may lead to long term ill health, staff taking extensive sick leave, a high turnover of staff, and recruitment problems.

Allowing consistently high levels of stress at work can leave employers open to Health and Safety claims from employees, and a stressed lawyer is not a careful or efficient lawyer so negligence claims are also a major risk.

All of these problems can be reduced if a little consideration is given to the issue of stress.

How can LawCare help?

At LawCare our mission is twofold:

  • We offer health support and advice to Lawyers. This means we can help Solicitors, Barristers, Legal Executives and support staff deal with stress by offering them support, assistance and information when it all becomes too much. This service is completely confidential. Our helpline number is 0800 279 6888.

  • Also, prevention is better than cure, so we also offer stress presentations and workshops.

What does it cost?

The presentations are offered free to law firms, chambers, local Law Societies and special interest groups. All we ask is that you pay the travelling expenses of the LawCare staff member who comes to give the talk, plus the cost of any materials provided. To book a presentation call 01268 771333.
